Big Bang ERP And How It Is Better Than Other Methods Of ERP Implementation

The implementation strategy used for implementing the ERP system in an organization is the most difficult decision-making task. Big Bang ERP implementation strategy is one of these implementation strategies that helps to quickly finish off the implementation process of the ERP system in an organization.

Adopting a particular implementation strategy depends upon situation to situation. In some situations it is beneficial to adopt fast Big Bang ERP implementation strategy and in some cases the ERP system is slowly phased in new technology and processes over a time period.

The Big Bang ERP implementation strategy focuses on the organization intensely for a shorter period of time as compared to phased implementation approach. Thus, it shortens the time taken to implement the ERP system.

Big bang implementation strategy means instant adoption to a change over. Big Bang is actually one of the ways to adopt the new system, when a new system like the ERP system needs to be implemented on the existing system. The other two ways to do this are known as Phased implementation approach and Parallel implementation approach.

To better understand how Big Bang ERP implementation strategy is different from Phased and Parallel approaches, let us define them all.

In Phased approach, the new system gets slowly implemented in several phases and then completely takes over the existing system.

In Parallel approach, the adoption of new system on to the existing system takes place in parallel so that the users slowly get used of the new system while continuing their work on the old system.

In Big Bang implementation approach, the switch over from old system to the new system takes on the single date; that is, it is an instant switch over. The users start using the new system from the same date at which the new system gets implemented and on the same date the old system is completed removed from its use.

One of the disadvantages of Phased approach that is overcome by Big Bang approach is that in Phased approach, each module is dependent on the information from the other modules to complete the implementation process. So it takes time and may lead to a number of errors. Thus, Big Bang approach is a better option as the implementation is instant and independent of the old system.

As soon as the organization decides to incorporate the Big Bang approach to implement ERP in the system, the real change over process starts up instantly. Hence, Big Bang implementation strategies work at places where aggressive implementation procedures are required.

Big Bang ERP implementation approach is therefore, the best approach for almost all the key modules like Sales Process module, Factory management module, purchase management module, etc.
